Choose A Strong Domain Name

Previously I talked about the need to be creative when choosing a domain name. You have to be creative because everyone who has gone before you has already thought of your name idea. A few years ago I took a stab at writing greeting cards. I’d send in dozens if not hundreds of greeting card ideas and was rejected flat out. Why? Because I was thinking like 99% of the other greeting card writers. And when I saw greeting cards in the stores similar to what I had sent in, I then understood. Clearly to make it in the holiday greeting card writing business, you need to think creatively. So it is with domain names. Write down a few hundred ideas for what you call “creative” names. Set them aside and think outside the box at new ones because chances are really good that your first several dozen ideas have already been taken.

There is a way that you can buck the system a bit. But even at this, many have bucked the system too. And the method to which I am referring is to add a word at the end of your chosen phrase. For example, our example domain name is lampshade. Without even checking, it’s a good bet that lampshade dot com was taken years ago. Same thing with lampshade dot net and lampshade dot org. You can select a lesser known domain name extension and that may suit you fine. If you wanted to go into any kind of marketing, the .net, .us, .info, .asia, .ws, etc are generally associated with lower quality sites. That’s not always the case but often. So that is also something you may wish to consider . Still, the .net, com, and .org are highly recommended and easier to remember. If at all possible go for the .com extension. Earlier I mentioned that you can “cheat” a little. You can use the words you want and if they have already been selected by someone else, it’s simple enough to add the word info or blog to the end. So the address of your blog would be bitlampshadeinfo dot com or lampshadeblog dot org. Again, the more popular products or areas such as car or job or insurance have hundreds if not thousands of folks who have created their own little niches from using those phrases too. I haven’t checked but I can almost assure you that carsblog and carsinfo in any of the three extensions have been taken. Next! But your lesser used words may not be.

The other thing we can consider is using underscores and dashes. Your first choice should be to have the phrase before the extension all one word. If you have a choice, however, between a dash or underscore, choose the dash. Underscores are really good for technology geeks and programmer types. In fact, when your website pages are uploaded and converted into PDFs, you will see underscores in the address bar, usually after the dot extension.

So, to summarize. Use one whole phrase, if possible, with a .com, .net. or .org. If those are taken, put a word such as info, blog, or review in the title. Next, use dashes or hyphens between your words or underscores. Finally, use a lesser known extension such as .us, .info, .euro, .asia. As people take stronger domain names such as what I’ve described above, more of those dot extensions are being added to accommodate.

Registering a domain is easy and relatively inexpensive. You’ve probably seen the Godaddy commercials during the Super Bowl. For the last several years, they’ve been very enticing. They are probably the world’s best known domain registrar. I don’t understand what exactly happens when you pay the fee but Godaddy has an agreement with the registration body: Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ICANN. that body makes sure that there are enough suffixes (.org, .net. .mobi., .asia, etc.) for the world. I’m sure they do much more but that’s all we need to know for now.

There are literally thousands of domain registrars. 1and1.com is one. Godaddy is another. Type “domain registration” into Google (with the quotes) and a kazillion of them will display. Search around on the first page for one that you feel comfortable with and then just go for it. Most of those sites are very newbie friendly (have you gotten used to the term “newbie” yet? We were all where you are right now and pretty soon you’ll be giving out advice just like the rest).

Of course, most of these organizations will accept Paypal or your credit card. If not, search around for one until you find one. They do exist. I can honestly say that when you register your first domain, there’s not a feeling like it in the world! After you’ve registered a few, that feeling fades away but you still have the remembrance of your first domain.

Lastly, when registering your domain, make sure you check “Private” or “Private registration.” Simply put, it costs a couple of extra bucks (especially nice when you’ve got a coupon code for a reduced price), but the benefits are worth it. In fact, you can see those benefits as you search around the site for a short period of time, and probably there’s a question mark box right near the word Private.
