Or how about at the last baseball game you went to and they handed out free bobble head toys or beach towels? Do you still have that item sitting in your closet or on your desk? Or did you give it to a family member? Either way, think about the feeling you experienced when you got that item. I bet you could remember the name of the company who handed you a free toothbrush at a health fair before you could remember the name of a dentistry commercial on television during “Dancing with the Stars.” Whether you are a consumer collecting a “Free Gift with Purchase” or an employee accepting a “Best Customer Service Award,” you will appreciate and be fond of any company that gives you a free item.

But primarily, allow me clarify the term “free item.” A company can’t give out just any item with their brand on it and expect to have amazing results. The promotional items you hand out can say a lot about how you view your clients and staff. If you give your regular client of 10 years a cheap cardboard frame that reads “Thanks a Million,” don’t expect them to be jumping for joy. It is a fact that they would feel more appreciated with an item that seemed to be of value in this situation.
